June 14th - Flag day
Have you seen Flag day on calendars and wondered what is this special day? Well I have. Here is what I have learned.
1. June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with 13 white stars in a circle on a blue square and 13 red and white stripes – one for each state.
2. June 1886, Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual observance of the birth of the flag.
3. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation for a nationwide observance of Flag day on June 14, 1916.
4. Flag Day did not become official until August 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day.
Read the US Flag Code to learn the guidelines for displaying and handling the flag.
