July 4th Festival at the Tempe Town Lake

Who would have thought that you could see fireworks both in the city and over a body of water larger than a pool in Arizona?  It’s hard to believe right.  I mean we aren’t near the ocean.  In Tempe, you can have a picnic or eat festival food and watch fireworks over the lake.

The Kiwanis Club of Tempe sponsors and produces the Tempe Town Lake Festival.  Tempe has had a Fourth of July Festival since at least 1999!  If you haven’t come out to the festival, you should.  They put on a fabulous festival and huge fireworks display.   The festival runs from 5-11pm.  This is a long time so pace yourself accordingly.

If you have younger kids that need to go to bed early, consider coming down to the town lake, play at the splash playground, eating dinner, watch the fireworks and then go home.  It will be hot so you all will be tired by the time the fireworks go off.  If you have an older crowd, consider having dinner downtown at one of the many restaurants on Mill Avenue, walking to the town lake to watch the fireworks and then hangout and listen to the live music.

There is plenty of activity for both young and old at the festival.  They have a Kids Zone area with games, bounce structures and various family activities.  It’s a festival, so of course there will be yummy fattening food to eat along with snow cones, sodas and frozen treats.  There will be live entertainment found at the Hot Summer Nights Stage.

The schedule for the main stage is:

5:00pm Gates Open
5:35pm Welcome / Mary Sannapu Reciting the Declaration of Independence
5:40-6:40pm Lane Change Rock Quartet
6:40pm Welcome

These items are allowed in the festival; 1 gallon of sealed water per person, blankets, portable chairs, personal cameras and personal umbrellas (up to 48” in diameter) are allowed.  You definitely want to protect your body during the heat of the day, so bring the umbrella, water and sunscreen.  For a fun Fourth of July Festival, check out Tempe Town Lake.  Tickets are $5.00.  You can pre-purchase or purchase at the door.  Admission is free with an active military ID!!
